The Department of Law

(more commonly known as the Attorney General’s Office) is headed by the Attorney General, which is currently held by Phil Weiser, a democrat running for re- election. The AG represents and defends the legal interests of Coloradoans and the sovereignty of the State of Colorado as well as the common law.

the Colorado legislature and State agencies The AG acts as “the People’s Lawyer for citizens and is authorized to present written opinions on questions of law to the: Colorado General Assembly House of Representatives Senate Governor Lieutenant Governor Secretary of State Executive Director of the Department of Revenue State Treasurer State Auditor Commissioner of Education The AG enforces: consumer protection and antitrust laws; prosecution of criminal appeals and some complex white-collar crimes; the Statewide Grand Jury; training and certification of peace officers; and most natural resource and environmental matters. The AG works with the state’s 22 DAs and other local, state, and federal law enforcement authorities, carrying out criminal justice responsibilities and activities for the office. As chief legal counsel, the AG advises the executive branch of government and all state government departments as well as state agencies, boards, and commissions.
